Your Guide to the Kentucky Bourbon Trail

The Kentucky Bourbon Trail is a dream destination for many bourbon lovers. It's a chance to go behind the scenes at Kentucky's signature distilleries, learn about bourbon production and, of course, sample some world-famous bourbon.

For a small group from The Good Pour, visiting the Bourbon Trail offered a chance to pick our very own bourbon barrels and see where the bottles we sell in store begin their journey to becoming a beloved bourbon.

Here are the highlights from our trip:

Want to visit the Bourbon Trail? Here’s our recommendation on when and where to go if you want to sip and savor the unique heritage and history of bourbon.

When to Visit

The Kentucky Bourbon Trail can be enjoyed year-round, but each season offers its own unique charm. Spring brings blooming wildflowers and pleasant temperatures, while summer offers a vibrant atmosphere with festivals and outdoor activities — the Kentucky Bourbon Festival is held each September. Fall is a beautiful time to visit, too, with colorful foliage and cooler weather, while winter brings a cozy ambiance, perfect for sipping bourbon by a fireplace.

Must-See Distilleries

The Kentucky Bourbon Trail features over 20 distilleries, each with its own distinct personality and offerings. Here are a few stops we enjoyed — and others we look forward to touring next time:

Maker's Mark – Loretto, Kentucky

Known for its hand-dipped bottles and unique process of "cask strength," Maker's Mark offers a warm and welcoming experience. If you buy a bottle in the gift shop, you get to dip into the red wax yourself!

Jim Beam – Clermont, Kentucky

One of the largest distilleries in the world, Jim Beam produces a variety of bourbons, including the iconic Knob Creek. We were thrilled to pick our very own Knob Creek barrel during our visit. We highly recommend dining at The Kitchen Table Restaurant on site, too.

Four Roses – Lawrenceburg, Kentucky

This distillery is famous for its ten different recipes, each with a unique flavor profile. When we picked our own Four Roses barrel from ten blind options, the winner was an OBSV with 35% rye.

Heaven Hill – Bardstown, Kentucky

Heaven Hill is a family-owned distillery that produces a wide variety of bourbons, including Evan Williams and Elijah Craig. We loved exploring the welcome center, which impressed us with museum-quality exhibits and experiences covering the history of bottled in bond bourbon.

Willett Distillery – Bardstown, Kentucky

Known for its high-quality bourbon and rye whiskeys — and iconic bottle shaped like a copper pot still — Willett’s most popular offerings include Willett Pot Still Reserve and Noah’s Creek. If you’re planning a visit, take a tour and make a reservation at The Bar at Willett.

Buffalo Trace – Frankfort, Kentucky

Home to some of the most sought-after bourbons, such as Pappy Van Winkle and Weller, Buffalo Trace offers guided tours and tastings. It’s on our list for next time!

Woodford Reserve – Versailles, Kentucky

Known for its rich history and commitment to craftsmanship, Woodford Reserve produces a range of premium bourbons. Another must-see for our next trip to the Bourbon Trail.

Whether you're a seasoned bourbon connoisseur who collects dusties or you’re just starting your bourbon journey, the Kentucky Bourbon Trail offers an unforgettable experience.
